Halcyon Evolve Buoyancy Compensators

Halcyon DIR Dive Systems again raises the standard for precision buoyancy control with the release of the new Evolve dual cylinder wing.

The Evolve's design is the result of an intense two-year period of testing by the Halcyon product development team. While the typical doubles wing uses a horseshoe-shaped bladder, the Evolve draws its design inspiration from Halcyon's successful Eclipse circular bladder single-tank wing.

The Evolve builds upon Halcyon's dedication to designing gear for the advanced diver. The Evolve's development team focused on improvements in stability, buoyancy and trim control. The Evolve's circular design allows for precise control of in-water buoyancy and trim. Horizontal trim is easily accomplished through the addition of lift at the base of the cylinders. Gas trapping on one side or the other of the wing is virtually eliminated.

Technical divers depend upon the ability to control buoyancy by venting gas from both the inflator and the rear over-pressure valve. The Evolve matches the Eclipse for ease of use of the rear over-pressure valve for venting gas during the dive. Wreck divers and cavers will immediately appreciate the Evolve's ease of buoyancy adjustment.

Because the Evolve's buoyancy cell circles the tanks, the wing has a much more streamlined profile than any other doubles wing on the market. It doesn't matter if you are swimming or scootering, the Evolve's profile cuts through the water with less drag and greater efficiency.

The Evolve has been extensively tested in every possible condition, from the tropics to the arctic, with aluminum and steel cylinders, with open circuit and with rebreathers. Halcyon has worked closely with its international testing team to refine the design to create the first breakthrough in doubles wing design in decades.

The Evolve wing integrates seamlessly with Halcyon's existing line of MC systems, and is available in 40 lbs. (18 kg), and 60 lbs. (27 kg) lift capacities, either individually, or as part of their complete MC System.

*** Updates for 2008 ***

Halcyon is pleased to introduce the Evolve 30 Wing, the first 13.6 kg.-lift circular-bladder wing designed exclu-sively for smaller European twinsets.European divers have long known the advantages of building a twinset out of small steel cylinders. A 7 liter twinset is comfortable for both men and women diving from shore or boat, yet it provides better weight and trim characteristics than a single cylinder.

Wings designed for the larger 12, 16, and 20 liter tanks can be ungainly to use with these smaller twinsets. Working with our German-based distributor BtS, Hal-cyon began brainstorming on a smaller design for the popular Evolve wing specifically engineered for smaller European twinsets. After months of testing and refine-ment, the Halcyon Evolve 30 is now ready for release. The Evolve 30 provides 30 lbs. (13.6 kg) of lift.

Single tank set up with an Explorer or Evolve wing?

Halcyon actively discourages divers from using Explorer or Evolve wings for single tank diving. Unfortunately, the idea that a doubles wing is somehow compatible with a single tank configuration is a common idea, promoted by several industry manufacturers and, consequently, some diving retailers. To our dismay, we see divers laboring in vain to dive an obviously over-sized wing with their single-tank configuration. Proper trim and buoyancy control becomes nearly impossible to attain– or maintain, for that matter. Such a large air cell, designed to support the width of double tanks, allows gas in the wing to shift dramatically, leaving the diver struggling to regain stability instead of relaxing to enjoy the dive.

Ultimately, Halcyon suggests that divers consider the modularity of the Halcyon MC system and avail themselves of the ability to use the Eclipse wing most appropriate to the diving they will be doing. Using the right tool for the job allows a diver to enjoy their time below the surface. As the comfort level increases and the stress of struggling with awkward equipment lessens, the diver will discover that their gear should “disappear” during the dive, leaving them to better enjoy their time in the water– and hopefully to dive more often. In the event that a diver does pursue double tank

diving, an Explorer or Evolve wing of appropriate size can easily be added to their existing back plate and harness. In the end, the diver will save time, money, and effort if they use the right gear for the specific dive. The beauty of the DIR approach to diving is that no matter what the diving environment– single tank, double tank, warm or cold water, cave, ice, or tech– the diver harness, inflator and dump valve positions are exactly the same regardless of the Halcyon wing you use. No matter what the environment or level of dive, you will be completely at home in your equipment.
